SHANNON MEYERS DNP, APRN, PMHNP-BC, FNP-C

Doctor of Nursing Practice
Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

Family Nurse Practitioner

My name is Dr. Meyers. I’ve been working in the medical field for over twenty years. In the last ten years, my primary area of practice has been specifically focused in psychiatry. I’m double-board-certified as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner and as a family nurse practitioner. I feel my educational background and clinical experience in both family practice and psychiatry gives me a well-rounded perspective of both physical and mental well-being.

Treatment Philosophy

I enjoy treating patients of all ages, and I see patients between the ages 5 and 64. I enjoy working with patients with a variety of diagnoses across the spectrum of mental health disorders, including mood disorders, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and trauma. I have experience working with children and adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Each patient is unique. I work with my patients to develop an individualized treatment plan utilizing an integrated approach to care, which I feel provides the best clinical outcomes. I actively listen to my patients, work collaboratively to develop a treatment plan, and focus on education. Having patients understand and actively participate in their own treatment is key. When patients know how their medications work and the risks/benefits of them, they feel more involved in their own care, and ultimately more comfortable.

Working together to facilitate healing and positive changes in the lives of my patients is part of my clinical approach. I also strive to provide holistic treatment, focusing on therapeutic intervention along with medication management.

I have always enjoyed helping others. I gravitated towards psychiatry early on in my career and truly enjoy it. I am passionate about helping those with mental health conditions receive treatment in a respectful and compassionate manner.

Education and Experience

My educational background includes an undergraduate degree from University of Central Florida, graduate degree as a family nurse practitioner from South University, graduate degree as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner from University of Cincinnati and a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from Chatham University.

I have worked in many areas of psychiatry over the years in both inpatient and outpatient settings, and served as a lead psychiatry provider including positions as interim medical director and chief nursing officer for several large outpatient psychiatry practices. I have also served as a preceptor for future nurse practitioners and doctoral students from several universities, including University of Minnesota and University of Cincinnati. I have extensive experience in practicing via telepsychiatry. I have been working with patients using telepsychiatry for 8 years. Access to patient care is one of my goals as a clinician and telepsychiatry has been a key component in expanding access.
